howdy hey...
I did a search for this, but came up with nothing, so forgive me if this has been asked before...
apologies as well for not having the time to code house in blue...

I have a copy of this great novel... it states that it is the second edition, it's printed and distributed by randomhouse...
on the page with all of this information is says:

"A Note On This Edition"

and goes on to describe 4 versions of the book as so -
"begin quote/

Full Color
- The word house in blue; minitaur and all struck pages in red.
- The only struck line in Chapter XXI appears in purple.
- Braile and Color plates.

Two Color
- Either house appears in blue or struck pages and the word minitaur appear in red.
- No Braille.
- Color or black&white plates.

Back & White
- Color is not used for the word house, minotaur, or struck pages.
- No Braille.
- Black & White plates.

Incomplete
- No color.
- No Braille.
- Elements in the exhibits, appendices and indes may be missing.
"
/end quote

so... circled (squared, rather) is the 2-Color version for me, yet, minotaur never appears in red throughout the book. No color whatsoever except for the word house being in blue.

my questions, naturally -

does a 2-color version with minotaur in red exist? why isn't it mine/can I get a refund?! images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

even better, does the Full Color version exist? if so, where can I get it?

I've called the publisher and got nowhere, they hardly even know what it is I'm talking about...

any help is greatly appreciated!

In response, I've got the same "edition" and I've never seen any other editions, so I think the different versions deal is just another thing to add realism to the book. I could be wrong of course, but I'm guessing it's just another quirk from Danielewski. BTW, did anyone see POE perform "Hey Pretty" on Conan O'Brien the other night? Mark did the first verse, then POE took over and finished the song, it was really quite cool live...

Hello; I'm new....

I have the Black-and-White edition mentioned in the first post; so I know that one exists.

I didn't think the colour ones would be easy to get.
At least, I've never seen one.
But then, I do live in Scotland.

Well, here's a bit of info for you on the Full Color Edition question...a problem which I, too, have pondered myself.

I went to a free Poe concert in Providence, RI on July 2...and who did I see walking amongst the people with a video camera...yes, you guessed it...Mark.
Poe brought him on stage for "Hey Pretty" but then and went back to filming.

Afterwards, he was sitting in the area behind the stage and signing a few autographs. I managed to grab one of those myself and then struck up a 20min conversation.

Mark said in regards to the Full Color Edition that when he was originally publishing the book that he wanted each edition that we see listed to be published seperatly. However, he didn't have the money to do so at the time. So he listed them at the start of the book and decided to go from there. He did say that the "red" edition and the "full color" edition of the book were going to be printed sometime in the near future. As of right now, though, the only editions we have are the "blue" that we have here in the US...and the Black and White that is distributed in the UK.

Hope this clears some tings up...it did for me images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Oh yeah, I almost forgot.

The "Incomplete" edition refers to any edition that was pulled from the internet. When Mark first finished the book, he didn't have the money to publish it but some of his friends wanted to read it. So he put in on some obscure URL and gave them the links. Well, we all know how things pass around the Net and this was just as usual. When he found a publisher for the book, there were already a few "bootlegged" copies floating around that were pulled from the URL.

Thus, the "Incomplete" editions.

I would love to get ahold of one.

wow, thank you Julius Blaise! that makes me feel a little better... =)

*grasps "blue" edition tightly* now if the full color edition could quickly be published...

I have the 2 color edition also but instead of the blue edition i got the red one so minotaur is red along with all of the crossed out passages plus the compass on the cover of my book is filled in with red, on a friend's book (which is the blue two color edition) the compass is not filled in. thius is strange to me maybe this might bring up new questions for you.

Wait a second, before we say here we go again, think about it. four versions. four. the number permeates the pages of HOL. what if each version represents a different characters point of view. the things that each thinks is important. BUt who would equal which version?

Zampano's would have to be one containing brail

johnny's would be the one with minataur in red, since he was the one so concerned in salvaging the passages.

navy's is the house in blue version, because the house is real to him, where as to the others its just type on a page, haunting yes, but they didn't personally experience the house like navy.

as for the last version? anyone?

thanks FQ, you give me ideas, I likey

Maybe each edition is more for certain character types than characters.

Maybe my boring UK/Eire copy, devoid of colour completely, is Karen/Pelafina's, for example, or maybe one of the editions does not exist - and perhaps this non-existent edition is for Holloway and the others that died in the house.

The cool thing about this non-existent copy of HoL is that it is free, and available by rubbing your <strike>minotaur</strike> monitor. I can't find my copy since I put it down, though...

what if the colorless version is the one for Z. i mean, why would it matter to a blind man if there was color. the full color edition with the braille plates and such is for J, since that seems to be how he found it. and red edition is for karen, since the minotaur thing is a paternal/maternal question (eep, i just had a creepy thought, what if chad and daisy arent really navy's kids) and teh blue one is for navy, cuz for him the house is whats important.

...oooh. And I guess a genetic test wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Navy and Tom. Plus that could explain why Tom makes such an effort to save Daisy.

I forget, does the book ever tell us what tom and navy have that disagreement about 8 years previous, and how old are the kids, isn't daisey 6, or was it four.

you know what, forget I said anything

recently I have been caught on the idea of the house being the book itself. I don't remember who first proposed ythis position but it has circulated around to the point where now it makes circle hoops in my head.

Karen's journal, the first appearence of the closet, the thick novel, navy reads it, johnny reads it, zampano writes about it, we read it.

I get the feeling that the hallways represent reflection. The mirror theory only the novel is set up like you were in a room with a mirror on opposite walls. and you see infinite layers of the same thing. This book is layered, the last layer being us reading it.
