Having dutifully searched with the search engine, and found absolutely nothing, I feel compelled to start a new topic.
What art does House of Leaves suggest, echo, mention, or remind you of?
For example:
Page 661 (of the paperpack Pantheon ed.) is a black and white photo of Sarah Newbery's "Conceptual Model of the Navidson House."
It looks quite similar to the boxes made by Joseph Cornell (1903-1972). He made these beautiful boxes of stuff. It's pointless to describe them, especially with this
link (http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/cornell/) handy. One of the reasons I initially bought the book was spotting the Newbery box when I flipped through the book in the store.
Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978) springs to mind too. There's an uncanny feeling to his paintings--at least the ones done during before 1940 (can't remember when he started painting differently).
Look here. (http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/de_chirico_giorgio.html)
Cheers
ps hope I used the instant ubb code right

Thank you for the thread ThomasJ. images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
I just remembered Richard Serra. I would include links, but I'm feeling lazy. Large metal sculptures, many of them an ashy grey color. I usually don't care much for minimalist or conceptual art, but his work is ok. I can't find the reference, but I think he submitted a proposal for the Holocuast Memorial in Berlin. I don't think it was used. It was supposed to be a grid of tall rectangular blocks, probably all greyish black. Each block was the same height, but they were supposed to be buried at different depths. So at one end of the grid, they were only a few feet tall, but as one walked through the site the height of the blocks would increase. I hope that made sense. Sort of like the house. Sorta. I hope I'm not imagining that proposal. Perhaps he could be the set designer for the movie that will never (and should never) be made.
Oh--one of his pieces killed someone when it fell over.

Radiohead--especially OK Computer, where the lyrics are placed all crazy in the booklet, and some of them have blue highlights.
Plus they have a minotaur too.

I'd just like to say that this thread got me to read four others. Good to see threads that reference others.

And here's another for you. One of the first art pieces I think of in relation to House of Leaves if of course Bill Stoneham's "The Hands Resist Him" (http://www.bbc.co.uk/derby/unexplained/2002/haunted_painting/ebay_haunted_painting_01.shtml).
Oddly, this painting was discussed at length here not so long ago, but none of the threads containing it leapt forth during a search, so instead you will have to do the grunt work elsewhere on the internet.
Basically, its a painting by an otherwise [mediocre] artist, that the owners claimed was haunted. It was sold on Ebay for $1250 or so in 2000. Anyway, some of the urban folklore surrounding it is quite interesting, so have a look.
As far as other artists whose work reminded me of HoL, I think Anish Kapoor (http://www.lissongallery.com/theArtists/Kapoor/anishkapoor.html) is an obvious choice. When I saw his crazy giant red trumpet things in the Tate Modern last October, the sheer size of them made me feel like I was wandering down the Grand Staircase.
Then I would also suggest Mike Nelson's work, in particular pieces such as Coral Reef (http://www.guardian.co.uk/gallery/image/0,8543,-11804195037,00.html). People who explored the work during its nomination for the Turner Prize 2001 mentioned the feeling of trespass. I think the way it manipulated the feeling within a space was fascinating.
I would also suggest Martin Creed (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/arts/1698032.stm), who was the winner of the same year's Turner Prize. Maybe because I was thinking about HoL when I was reading about the work, and watching the prize on TV, but also because I feel the way he makes something of nothing, such as an inch cube of masking tape, is somewhat reminscent of MZD's ability to make something out of NOTHING. (that last link also hae a good picture of Mike Nelson's Coral Reef)
I've mentioned most of those before, but its always nice to talk about them because I liked them so much.
Also Catherine Yass (http://www.channel4.com/culture/microsites/T/turner_2002/nominees/nominees.html), one of the nominees for Turner 2002. I liked her stuff because she is an architectural photographer, like I am slowly becoming. But I also liked the way she robbed meaning from a film of descent down Canary Wharf, by playing the film very slowly, and upside down. Also made me think about HoL, because of the way it took away the context of what you were looking at.

I remember that thread. Think I posted in it... Tried looking under links page, but didn't find it there. That's one I'd associate too, if for no other reason than how intensely CREEPY it is...
I liked the Kapoor pieces, particularly the ones referring to blood; very appealing to the eye. I don't think the pieces you're referring to are shown though. I'll look for them later. Is it just me, or do the last two look strikingly similar to genitalia?
Are Nelson and Creed photographers, or sculptors?
As far as sculpture, check out the new Chili pepper's video "cant Stop". The wall is just great. But then again, I find that the chili pepper's put out a lot of thoughtful videos for their last few albums.
Something I've been wondering: anyone know where I can see this (http://www.houseofleaves.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=000056)?
I stumbled on the thread, but the link in it's dead, and I'm dying to see what's got everyone up in arms.

Found the creepy painting thread here: Haunted Painting (http://www.houseofleaves.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=000070). Creeps me the fuck out. Didn't like even opening the thread to get the URL.

Oh, that's one of those internet "jokes" that circulated for a while. I don't know where you can see it, but if you're really curious, I'll tell you what it's about.
By the way, I absolutely love the Cheltenham City Centre thread. It's one of my favorites.

Me too. The statues had been there since I was about 10 or 12, but the last time I visited I suddenly realised their impact on me in respect to HoL.
Yes, a nice thread from happier times.

Not supremely relevant, but an enjoyable Bloomian misprison of <a href="http://www.houseofleaves.com/forum/showpost.php?p=116629&postcount=139">De Vos's hunt scenes</a>
