View Full Version : Quick Qustion
I think I remember reading at one point in a list that Zampano did that Will Navidson dies in the house - but of course we all know what happens at the end. Does anyone remeber the same list? I'm going to go back through and find it tonight.
Also, I have to point out the obvious. The first letter in Zampano: Z. Mark's middle inital? Z. Does Mark feel the same as Zampano?

I never thought about the Mark/Zampano connection, I always though Mark might be like one of the Navidson family members or Johnny.
As to your question. Navidson MAY die in the house. We'll never know. Zampano didn't finish writing the story before he died.
How do I know? Johnny refers to the "masterpiece" as never finished, just like his own story (see the introduction). images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

The Zampanò - Danielewski connection kind of struck me as well. It's not only that the Zampano-Z ist the first letter of Danielewski's middle name but when spelling out Mark Z. Danielewski in the footnotes 27 to 42 Zampanò was explicitly chosen to represent the Z.
Apert from this clue Zampanò being Danielewski kind of makes sense when you follow the interpretation of HoL being a book about itself being read. Danielewski is the Zampano as he has prepared the playing field for the reader to even start interpreting anything obviously. He placed riddles (and maybe as I have pointed out elswhere even enigmas, riddles without solution) throughout the book to keep us confused and guessing. Feeding the child in us that still loves riddles.
Zampanò kind of did the same in a smaller scale (there is no added "Johnny-filter"). He most likely made up a story trying to keep it as believable as possible while adding outrageously obscure facts to it and leaving open ends to be knotted together by the reader (which was in that case Johnny). Also his (ie Zampanò) mixture of existing quotes with made up ones might be compared to Danielewski's setting up of riddles and enigmas (if that idea is correct that is of course...).
Well, so much for now. More to come later maybe. I am right now on my second run through the book, so ideas develope on the go :D
