Page 476 a line from The Beatles' Help! "Now I find I changed my mind and opened up the door..."
and on the next page
Page 477 a line from another film2001: A Space Odyssey (and baby song)
Page 392 the words "fucking photojournalist" appears a page turn away from the part where I figured Delial was an anagram for "all die". The Cure song A Hundred Years on "Pornography" includes the words "It doesn't matter if we all die."
I didn't note the page but there's a bit about a woman riding Johnny combined with the other word for 'Gdanske' man Danzig's band The Misfits- She Rides.
On the Solstice June 21,1998 Johnny seems to allude to Que Sera Sera in regards to his own birthday!
Page 504 possible Rolling Stones allusion "It's just a copper answer away" like "It's just a shot away."
The lyrics of the song speak of seeking shelter from a coming storm, painting a picture of devastation and social apocalypse while also talking of the power of love:
“
Oh, a storm is threat'ning, My very life today; If I don't get some shelter, Oh yeah, I'm gonna fade away
”
“
War, children, it's just a shot away, It's just a shot away; War, children, it's just a shot away, It's just a shot away

There are two more lines that might have benn borrowed:
p131: "she just smiled and held my hand" is right out of Common People by Pulp
And on p81 there is this description of Jed where it's said that he first saw the cascades when he was twenty-seven and then fell in love instantly. This is kind of like Rocky Mountain High by John Denver. ("He was born in the summer of his 27th year...") It's probably not of much relevance concerning anything but the joy of discovering these kind of things but yeay :)

Well it depends how you look at it, i.e. whether you consider the silence plus random backwards nonsense at the end to be part of the song or not.
On the original vinyl release, as you can see, it's not quite five minutes long. On some of the CD versions, for instance the original UK CD release, it's 5'33", but on others it's likely to be 5'32" or 5'34".
Be good if it were 5'30", but again, it's not an exact science.
Oh, and Wikipedia is without a doubt the world's greatest source of information ever.

I love the irony of that quote leading off The Navidson Record.
Quote:
I saw a film today, oh boy...
Z most likely never saw TNR or The Five and a Half Minute Hallway but he starts off with a quote about seeing a film, from a song that was approximately five and a half minutes long.
Not to mention, MZD typesetting TNR in TNR and making it 528 pages long.
Fun stuff.

Of course she's not there, but that doesn't get me down. I'm still optimistic she'll arrive. And if not today, why fuck, tomorrow's just another day away.
A sentiment I could almost sing.
Is it just me, or is Johnny quoting the Bay City Rollers here?(!) [Edit: on p. 69]
I'm going to have to re-evaluate Johnny's taste in music.

And Beethoven - muss es sein? though that's not really a "song" is it?
The String Quartet No. 16. During the slow introduction, he inscribed "Must it be?" beneath the chords, and as the song speeds up, he responds with "It must be!"
Consider that the whole movement is headed with the phrase, "Der schwer gefasste Entschluss." The Difficult Resolution, or, The Heavey Resolution.
I personally like difficult more, because it reminds me of a camera lense...

... now they know how many holes it takes to fill the House.
