id just like to say that obvious as it may be but johnny truant - repercussions of a badly planned suicide is an almost perfect album for me to act as the soundtrack to this book. i listened to it whilst reading the book almost non stop and became so immersed in the world of the book i was literally shaking when i discovered i had been reading for 4 hours non stop and my girlfriend had rung my door bell 5 times and i just hadnt heard it...... immersed seems a good word for this situation.

Remember when you were at school, and you'd come back after the summer holidays, and there were a bunch of new kids around who you didn't know?
Wasn't that, like, weird?

i take it your referring to me and my first post. i read HoL about 4 months ago which doesnt exactly make me an old timer but i just discovered the website and 2 more suggestions for soundtracks are sunno))) and khanate. the way stephen o'malley's music builds up mimics the suspense and suggestions of isolation and increasing terror as suggested in the book. can i just say this book fucking rules. i hope this is something we all agree on

"Wide Open Space" by Mansun.
I’m in a wide open space, I’m standing
I’m all alone and staring into space
It’s always quiet thru’ my ceiling
The roof comes in and crashes in a daze
I’m in a wide open space, it’s freezing
You’ll never get to heaven with a smile on your face from me
I’m in a wide open space, I’m staring
There’s something quite bizarre I cannot see
I’m on the top of a hill, I’m lonely
There’s someone here to shout to miles away
I could be back in my House, for I care
They do not hear me, it’s the same old case
I first heard this song shortly after seeing Event Horizon, and it always gave me goosebumps.

i searched and i'm not sure if this is the exact right place to put this, but anyways... i saw these lyrics and part of them really reminded me of House of leaves, so here goes...
I know a girl
She puts the color inside of my world
and she's just like a maze
Where all of the walls all continually change
And I've done all I can
To stand on the steps with my heart in my hand
Now I'm starting to see
Maybe it's got nothing to do with me
Fathers be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters, too
Ooh, you see that skin
It's the same she's been standing in
Since the day she saw him walking away
Now she's left cleaning up the mess he made
So fathers be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters, too
Boys you can break
You find out how much they can take
Boys will be strong and boys soldier on
But boys would be gone without warmth from a woman's good, good heart
On behalf of every man, looking out for every girl
You are the god and the weight of her world
So fathers be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters, too
So mothers be good to your daughters, too
So mothers be good to your daughters, too
i'm not sure about the rest of the song, but i thought i'd post it all. it's by john mayer and is called daughters, and in general i dislike his music..
but anyways...

yeah, the rest is too... general family-like - it doesn't seem to fit with HoL anymore... probably just a meaningless similarity. But, good find, regardless.

this is kinda wierd...Ellimist you said it was just a meaningless similarity.. and i agree with you... but i wanted to see if maybe john mayer had read House of leaves of something... so i went to google..and put in: "john mayer" "House of leaves".. and i actually got something... not much.. but i still think its a little weird:
People have the right to fly
And when it gets compromised
Their hearts say "Move along"
Their minds say "Gotcha heart"
Let's move it along
Let's move it along
And airports
See it all the time
With someone's last goodbye
Blends in with someone's sigh
Cause someone's coming home
In hand a single rose
And that's the way this wheel keeps working now
That's the way this wheel keeps working now
And I won't be the last
No I won't be the last,
To love her
And you can't build a House of leaves
And live like it's an evergreen
It's just a season thing
It's just this thing that seasons do
And that's the way this wheel keeps working now
That's the way this wheel keeps working now
And you won't be the first
No you won't be the first
To love me
You can find me, if you ever want to give
I'll be around the bend
I'll be around the bend
I'll be around,
I'll be around
And if you never stop when you wave goodbye
You just might find if you give it time
You will wave hello again
You just might wave hello again
And that's the way this wheel keeps working now
That's the way this wheel keeps working now
You can't love too much, one part of it (repeat then fade)
I believe that my life's gonna see
The love I give
Return to me
I believe that my life's gonna see
The love I give
Return to me
I believe that my life's gonna see
The love I give
Return to me
yeah.. john mayer again this song is called wheel.

another song... this one by earthtone9 called House of leaves
some will never fade
indelible mark is made
those who wield the brightest flame
bring change
some marks are lighter
some courses are longer
some marks are lighter
some courses are longer
everyone will change
the remaining smoke ashes
the effort to remember
enslaves
some marks are lighter
some courses are longer
some marks are lighter
some courses are longer
but the autumn will still come
the leaves always fall
some will never fade
indelible mark is made
those who wield the brightest flame
bring change
some marks are lighter
some courses are longer
some marks are lighter
some courses are longer
but the autumn will still come
the leaves always fall

jeeze another song called House of leaves:
House Of Leaves
Born with teeth, unprotected, undressed in the midday sun
That’s okay I’ll leave the strand of hair you left alone
When a picture leaves the wall, someone then receives the call
Careless talk costs lives you know – best make it sure
The woods get thick so beat down the way
How far can you go until the House of leaves?
Red mannequin
Sees someone and takes them in
(I don’t mean anything).
You’re not feminine. You’re not centered in,
the stupid little things, unintentional.
Do you remember the time when Britain studied the treason line?
It couldn’t matter less – you’ve got it on borrowed time.
No-one ever sees who cares?
How far can you go until the House of leaves?
Don’t close the House in the woods
We needed it to be there
Troubled grace, guilt’s and the fears
Buried in the walls
The clues are few and far between
Painted so much the colours fade
The place where options start to show
All she needed was the time to know
Cut your hair, change your name, lose your friends
You don’t believe that stuff
You say it so off the cuff
What made you jump, what made you scared?
Is it something gone, or is it something there?
How far can you go until you get?
How far can you go until you get?
No-one ever sees you. Who cares?
How far can you go until the House of leaves
Staring, staring, staring inside the admission queues
Admit one for one
They say you’re leaving soon
This was where the good luck was made
So good luck, so long, don’t regret the decision made
Such precious time you keep
Precious time you keep
Promises you make
Promises
You know you’ve got it right here
Plans and schemes
To make it through
If I could just say hello I would
And make things good for you
If I could just say hello I would
Good luck in any space you choose
Well that’s better then
That’s all you need
Let’s keep in line
Now you’ve found a new way
Better then
That’s all you need
Let’s keep in line
Now you’ve found a new way
The woods get thick so beat down the way
How far can you go?
They never said they’d close the House up.
kinda cool. its by Seachange.

There was a thread on the John Mayer thing a while ago called John Mayer's New Album.

Not to worry. I searched for it too but it didn't come up. Luckily I have a better memory than the bloody search function, it seems.
Anyway, since we appear to be in the business of posting the lyrics of songs that have to do with HoL, this one always seems strangely reminiscent, even though it predates the book: - House Where Nobody Lives
by Tom Waits
There's a House on my block
That's abandoned and cold
Folks moved out of it a
Long time ago
And they took all their things
And they never came back
Looks like it's haunted
With the windows all cracked
And everyone calls it
The House, the House where
Nobody lives
Once it held laughter
Once it held dreams
Did they throw it away
Did they know what it means
Did someone's heart break
Or did someone do somebody wrong?
Well the paint was all cracked
It was peeled off of the wood
Papers were stacked on the porch
Where I stood
And the weeds had grown up
Just as high as the door
There were birds in the chimney
And an old chest of drawers
Looks like no one will ever
Come back to the
House were nobody lives
Once it held laughter
Once it held dreams
Did they throw it away
Did they know what it means
Did someone's heart break
Or did someone do someone wrong?
So if you find someone
Someone to have, someone to hold
Don't trade it for silver
Don't trade it for gold
I have all of life's treasures
And they are fine and they are good
They remind me that Houses
Are just made of wood
What makes a House grand
Ain't the roof or the doors
If there's love in a House
It's a palace for sure
Without love...
It ain't nothin but a House
A House where nobody lives
Without love it ain't nothin
But a House, a House where
Nobody lives.

The Treeman by Buckethead... preticularly the riffs 2:02-2:20.. sounds to me as the perfect 'film cue' to the points where the House in the navidson record is shifting, as in while the staircase expands and navidson's realization of this. I know it's hardly even 20 seconds of a track, though every time I hear it, this is what I see.

Save for the weird "hee-haw" at the end, this song in feel reminds me a lot of reading HoL .
Kate Bush - "Get Out of My House"
When you left, the door was
(slamming!)
You paused in the doorway
(slamming!)
As though a thought stole you away.
(slamming!)
I watched the world pull you away.
(Lock it!)
So I run into the hall,
(Lock it!)
Into the corridor.
(Lock it!)
There's a door in the House
(slamming).
I hear the lift descending.
(slamming!)
I hear it hit the landing,
(slamming!)
See the hackles on the cat
(standing).
With my key I
(lock it).
With my key I
(lock it up).
With my key I
(lock it).
With my key I
(lock it up).
I am the concierge chez-moi, honey.
Won't letcha in for love, nor money.
("Let me in!")
My home, my joy.
I'm barred and bolted and I
(Won't let you in).
(Get out of my House!)
No stranger's feet
Will enter me.
(Get out of my House!)
I wash the panes,
(Get out of my House!)
I clean the stains away.
(Get out of my House!)
This House is as old as I am.
(Slamming.)
This House knows all I have done.
(Slamming.)
They come with their weather hanging 'round them,
(Slamming.)
But can't knock my door down!
(Slamming.)
With my key I
(lock it).
With my key I
(lock it).
This House is full of m-m-my mess.
(Slamming.)
This House is full of m-m-mistakes.
(Slamming.)
This House is full of m-m-madness.
(Slamming.)
This House is full of, full of, full of fight!
(Slam it.)
With my keeper I
(clean up).
With my keeper I
(clean it all up).
With my keeper I
(clean up).
With my keeper I
(clean it all up).
I am the concierge chez-moi, honey.
Won't letcha in for love, nor money.
("It's cold out here!")
My home, my joy.
I'm barred and bolted and I
(Get out of my House!)
(Won't let you in).
(Get out of my House!)
No stranger's feet
(Get out of my House!)
Will enter me.
(Get out of my House!)
I wash the panes.
(Get out of my House!)
I clean the stains.
(Get out of my House!)
(Get out of my House!)
(Get out of my House!)
(Get out of my House!)
Won't enter me.
(Get out of my House!)
(Get out of my House!)
(Get out of my House!)
(Get out of my House!)
Yeah! Won't let you in!
(Get out of my House!)
(Get out of my House!)
"Let me in!
"Woman let me in!
Let me bring in the memories!
Woman let me in!
Let me bring in the Devil Dreams!"
I will not let you in!
Don't you bring back the reveries.
I turn into a bird,
Carry further than the word is heard.
"Woman let me in!
I turn into the wind.
I blow you a cold kiss,
Stronger than the song's hit."
I will not let you in.
I face towards the wind.
I change into the Mule.
"I change into the Mule."
Hee-haw! Hee-haw! Hee-haw-hee-haw-hee-haw-hee-haw...
"Hee-haw! Hee-haw! Hee-haw!"

the number of repetitions and the subject of these lines, reminded me of how the door to the labyrinth had four locks installed on it...

Since someone brought this thread up:
There's a Hindi/Urdu saying, which goes: Bhagvan, tere ghar mein der hai, andher nahi.
Word-for-word translation: God, your House has a queue, but it has no darkness.
Meaningful translation: God, though we have to wait to enter your House, and wait inside your House, there is no darkness in it.
What this means is that you may have to wait in God's House to meet him (or perhaps find him--navigate a maze?), there is no darkness there.
Nicely contradicts Danielewski's House, doesn't it?

*sigh* even though I stupidly created my own topic for this one lyric, i know that this is the proper place
These are the lyrics from AFI's song The Despair Factor
Along the path where the stream is talking,
I breathe the mist and continue walking.
The wood it whispers in a language of it’s own.
As a sigh escaped my lips,
I feel the light caress of fingertips that,
Steal away the breath and leave me on my own.
Waiting by the stairs. (waiting, I despair)
Waiting, I despair. (waiting by the stairs)
My whole life is a dark room.
One, big, dark room.
Do I hear the hollow sound,
Footsteps resounding on this frozen ground,
Or the familiar disappointment of the echoes of my own?
Waiting by the stairs. (waiting I despair)
Waiting, I despair. (waiting by the stairs)
[whispers:]
Somehow I ended up here in between,
Where there is always the comfort,
Of knowing I’ll never be seen.
When I fall
When I fall
I wait for just one touch,
And I fall
Weightless,
Endless,
Faithless, I’ll adore you.
A single touch, before I fade. painless let me pass through.
Weightless,
Endless,
Faithless, I’ll adore you.
A single touch, before I fade. painless let me pass through.

It reminds me of when Navidson was plummiting to his almost inevitable doom at the end of the last exploration.
Please correct me if i'm wrong...but didn't Navidson have a giant drop of faith before/durring the last exploration? Or was he just never one for faith?

He must have had some faith when he said, "Do you believe in God? . . . .Well I do now. . . our House is God." p 390
then, check out p 468 to see his complete lose: "I have nothing left."
definite parallel with the lyrics.

I distinctly remember being in the car on the way to the college I am attending in the fall. I was reading HOL and listening to the second disc of the White Album (the Beatles, of course). Just as "Revolution 9" came on, I reached the point where Navy is falling through the House (before Karen finds him). It seemed so appropriately scary with the craziness of the book and the weird sounds emanating from my headphones, so the two remind me of each other now.

First post.
I'm a fairly musical person, and I've come to associate quite a few songs with House of Leaves. Here's one in its entirity, from Silent Hill 4's soundtrack (unsurprising--the game is subtitled The Room and deals with the protagonist being stuck in his haunted apartment):
Tender Sugar:
I run, I fall
What ripped away?
Took my body now
Was it body or soul?
The darkness fades
Fades to the light
Disappearing now
Disappears from the night
And all these nightmares I once had as a child
Are more than allways gave; it came too late
What did my mind forget, forget to hide?
Could the nightmare be awake?
I don't know.
In or out
Up or down
Never know
It's an illusion
Round and round
On and on
Every day spins my confusion
Not again not again not again
This dream I can't awake
What is real what is real what is real
It's getting hard for me to take
What I need what I need what I need
A little something I rely
And the white-sugar gently hides me
O the sweet-sugar saves me
It's the room that confines me
Yesterday
Back and forth
Broken door no longer opens
Breaking down
Needy now
Mother-sugar always loves me
Not again not again not again
This dream I can't awake
What is real what is real what is real
It's getting hard for me to take
What I need what I need what I need
A little something I rely
And the white-sugar gently hides me
O the sweet-sugar saves me
It's the room that confines me

Mmmmm. Check out the threads on Silent Hill 4, Silent Hill and Hol and ( next-to-useless) silent hill 3. *o*'s on typical deadpan form in the latter...
