Excuse me?: Weird covers
The inspiration for this thread's title--Yes plays "Purple Haze":
(Disclaimer: I do like Yes, but . . . )

Not a true cover; more like a weird congruence: Garth Brooks and KISS performing "Hard Luck Woman":

I do kinda wish they had had the whole regalia thing going, with Gene Simmons doing the fire-breathing stuff, too. Ah, well.

This thread could just as well become Shatner's Greatest Hits:
. . . but a bit more variety would be good, I think.

And while we're on the category of complete, utter re-imaginings of songs:

Dolly Parton, "Stairway to Heaven":
Weird, but really, really good--makes you wonder what a band like 16 Horsepower could do this this song. And Ms. Parton, now in her 5th decade as a performer, can still flat out sing.

Leningrad Cowboys, "Smoke on the Water"--as kind of a Western Swing thing:
Kind of.
Bonus: Same group, doing
"Gimme All Your Lovin'." There's a strange intelligence at work in these boys.

Would you want Garth Brooks to be made up too? Or would it be enough for Simmons to blow fire at his face?

Chris Gaines thing . . .

Just as I was about to post his version of Closer...

Well, this one's special because it's actually much better than the Nine Inch Nails version.
A friend's band did a twist on that - they do Leo Sayer's "You Make Me Feel Like Dancin'" to the tune/tempo of Closer. Works pretty well.

That's true of several of Cheese's renditions. Such as the aforementioned "Creep", and I also prefer his version of "Down with the Sickness".

also if you liked the Leningrad Cowboys there is a trilogy of films about them (2 films and a concert film) by the Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki. 'Leningrad Cowboys Go America', 'Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses' and 'Total Balalaika Show'. I've only seen the first film, strange, dark, dry humour. Aki is often compared to Jim Jarmusch.

How many versions of "Girl from Ipanema" are there? This one, unlike those others, might make you forget (in a really good way) it's a bossa nova:
Bonus Shirley Horn: From the same performance, this glacially-paced version of
"Corcovado" ("Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars"). Not at all "weird"--just a really beautiful example of her work.
